Hello Black Kat families. The weather is getting nicer! You can feel spring in the air and the energy in the building is growing! Here is the latest new from FHS!

(Ms. McCarthy)

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, SOCKS GET PEOPLE TALKING!

On Tuesday, March 21st, choose some socks that are going to get noticed!  They might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy!

The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome.”   This helps to raise awareness about the importance of being included and some of the challenges people with Down syndrome may face.

Want to learn more about Down syndrome? Check out this website!

Share your socks with the world!   Don’t forget to share a ‘Lots Of Socks’ selfie on social media. Share your photo along with your message and include the hashtags…

It’s almost time to roll out the red carpet for the next Grad Event, The Rawries. The event, which is a comedic award ceremony for grads, will take place on Thursday, March 30th, from 7pm – 9pm in the TMT here at FHS. Tickets will be on sale on SchoolCash online starting Monday (March 20th) and will cost $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Come enjoy an evening of laughter with some of your teachers and fellow grads. Hope to see you there!

(Counselling Department)

Course Selections: Before the March Break the counselling department gave over 60 presentations to students in Grades 9, 10 and 11 and they have all the information they need to complete course selections for 2023-2024! Course descriptions and course selection guides were distributed in classes but have also been posted to our school website and on Homeroom teachers Teams page, along with the PowerPoint presentations explaining graduation requirements and things to consider when deciding on next year. MyBlueprint is an excellent web-based tool to assist students with identifying their strengths, interests and potential career paths, along with direct links to Canadian post-secondary institutions. It is linked on our FHS website and login information is in the back of our course guide.

Next steps?

On March 15 (during Period 2) Grade 9 students submitted their course requests on PowerSchool. If they have not yet done so, they need to see their school counsellor to access PowerSchool and finalize their selections.

On March 28th (during Period 2) Grade 10 and 11 students will be submitting their course requests on PowerSchool. They should come prepared with their 10 choices, and 2 alternates.

Our timetable for next year is built based on student requests so we ask that careful consideration is given to this!

Counsellors are available by appointment for consultation/support or students can drop by for a quick question before or after school, during the lunch hour or on a break between classes!

Hey Black Kats! Next Thursday, March 23rd, is our Blacklight dance. There will be laser tag, face painting, and a $1 canteen. Advance tickets can be bought at the SRC Office or on Cashless for $8. At the door, the tickets are $10. Make sure to have your student ID or your PowerSchool ready to show us when you arrive at the dance. We hope to see you there!

(Athletics – Mr. Carson)

Despite the weather, our spring sports are well underway.  I’m happy to say that this season we are able to offer 6 volleyball teams for our students.  This is a great opportunity for students to compete for FHS, and a big shout out to our coaches, because without their dedication and time this could not have happened.  This weekend FHS is hosting a JV Girls Volleyball tournament. Matches begin bright and early Saturday morning at 9:00 am and wrap up with the finals at 4:30.  Best of luck to our Varsity Girls Volleyball team who are travelling to Mathieu Martin for their senior girls tournament on Saturday.

Hockey playoffs are still underway, and our FHS Boys Hockey team has a chance to punch their ticket to the provincial final tournament with a win over Rothesay High School tonight 7:45 @ the LBR.  Good luck fellas!!

Be sure to follow FHS Athletics on our social to stay up to date.
