Happy Friday FHS Family!

I hope that you are all recovering from the heat wave that we’ve endured over the past two days!  Hard to believe that it’s 20 degrees already this morning!  The rain was a bit of a welcome to help cut the humidity a bit, but it looks like we’re heading for another day of sun and cloud with high temperatures.  It looks like cooler temperatures are on the way for next week!

Please let me introduce myself.  My name is Jason Burns and I am the Principal for FHS!  I’m very happy to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing community!  Each week, I will be sending out a quick email to let you know about things that were going on over the past week or events that are coming up.  As well, if we need to share a reminder, I’ll toss those in as well!

So, I just wanted to share some updates with you:

  1.  This past Tuesday, we welcomed our Grade 9 students to FHS!  Over 550 new Black Kat students were greeted with bagpipes and the hallway filled with applauding staff.  Students met their homeroom teacher, had a presentation in the TMT, had snacks and a free BBQ (hosted by the SRC) and had a shortened afternoon following their class schedules.  Lots to fit into one day!
  2. Wednesday, FHS was a full house as over 2250 students returned!  Students are getting settled back into school routines, and school life!
  3. Next week is PICTURE DAYS!!!  Harvey Studios will be here on Monday, Sept. 11th for students in 9 and 10.  On Tuesday, Sept. 12th, Harvey’s will return for Grades 11 & 12.FHS 9-11 Photo Day.jpg
  4. The FHS Safe Grad committee has a few fundraisers already up and running!  They have an account at the southside Redemption Centre, located at 70 Timothy Ave S, Hanwell.  Cans bottles and other refundables can be dropped off 24/7 at the trailer on the side of the building.  Please write our account number, 41, on EVERY bag to ensure that your donation goes to Safe Grad!  As well, Papa John’s has a code that you can use to save 25% off your food order, with 5% going to FHS Safe Grad!  Please use code: FHS2024 !
  5. FHS Football is up and running!  Come out and support the team tonight for our season opener at 7:30 @ Scotia South Turf by the Grant-Harvey Centre!  Tonight, the FHS Black Kats take on OHS!
  6. Our annual FHS Open House will be held on Thursday, Sept. 21st from 5:30 PM – 7PM.  More details to come!
  7. FHS SRC is excited to share that their annual “Welcome to the Jungle” event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 27th from 7-9PM!  More information to on this event to come, so stay tuned!
  8. Looking for some excellent live drama?  Well FHS has you covered!  This year, FHS Musical Production is proud to present, “Disney’s Descendants”!  The Musical focuses on the children of famous Disney heroes and villains!  Shows are Nov. 22, 23, 24 & 25 at 7:30 PM in the TMT.  Tickets are on sale now and you can purchase them by visiting https://theplayhouse.ca/en/schedule-and-tickets or by dropping by the Fredericton Playhouse.
  9. The Parent School Support Committee (PSSC) is a group of parents and community members who work in an encouraging, advisory, and collaborative fashion with the School Principal and staff to ensure the best possible learning opportunities for students of their school.  If interested, or for more information, please reach out to Joey Bernard at bernardj@unb.ca

As well, we have a few reminders:

  1. Please find attached the annual Fair Notice Letter for the 2023-2024 school year and the annual School Calendar.Fair Notice Letter 2023-2024_.pdf ASD-W School Calendar 2023-2024 (Public) June 2023.pdf
  2. When using the student drop off/pick up area in the morning or afterschool, please note that the actual drop off area is by the cafeteria and not the gym doors.  Stopping at the gym doors can cause a backlog in traffic.  As such, we ask that you drive ahead to the cafeteria doors.
  3. Just a reminder to students and visitors to reduce their speed in our parking lots and to yield for pedestrians.

I want to thank you for your continued support, and I hope that you all have a wonderful day!

Jason Burns
