Black Kat Wellness Day (May 31st)
The wellness day committee, with immense support from Mr. Carroll and our 50 Leadership students, have created a full day dedicated to wellness based on student and staff feedback- the want to feel connected in a time of disconnect. The Canadian Mental Health Association theme this year (May Mental Health Month) revolves around the idea that although one out of four people have mental health concerns, four out of four people have mental health. So our focus is on exposing students to a variety of ways people are able to keep themselves healthy and well- maybe try something new or do something that they know already makes them happy. We have been purposeful in creating a connection and have offered many activities to peak interest. Students can indicate their preference through the sign up link (QR CODE) posted around FHS for the two morning sessions and the day will conclude with a school spirit assembly for all. We encourage you to have a conversation with your student about taking advantage of the opportunity this day provides.
As part of this day, we are offering a job fair. Students interested in obtaining part-time work should plan to bring their resume to meet with potential employers. It is not too late to have your business added to the job fair. If you have interest in this, please e-mail Harmony.Smeltzer@nbed.nb.ca to be registered.

STUDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE FOR 2023-2024 ACADEMIC YEAR
New Brunswick students attending eligible post-secondary education programs starting between Aug. 1, 2023, and July 31, 2024, can now apply for student financial assistance. The online application is available at studentaid.gnb.ca, which has been redesigned to include more information for students and parents/guardians about the support available and the access process.
Students should complete their applications as early as possible to allow time for staff to review them, determine whether additional information or documentation is required, and help ensure eligible funding is available for the beginning of the study period.
New Brunswick Student Financial Services offers virtual question and answer sessions to anyone who is looking for more information on the financial support available for students. Students or parents/guardians can register for a session online.

Summer Learning Program 2023 – Ms. Maxwell
Registration can be done through school counsellors from June 1st – June 23rd.
Summer learning begins June 28th and ends July 27th and is open to students entering Grades 10, 11 or 12 and to 2023 graduates. There is no fee and students can upgrade a mark on a course already completed or take a course they haven’t yet attempted (from the attached list of offerings). Students can take only one course and the final mark will be added to their transcript upon completion. A commitment to daily participation is required as a full semester course is being condensed into one month. See your school counsellor if you have any more questions!
Info for Students
Q. What do these courses look like? Is there a syllabus?
A. These are condensed versions of the regular distance courses. They follow the same curriculum as other courses. For general information about the courses visit the New Brunswick Virtual Learning Centre course description site. There isn’t a syllabus, but students will have access to a complete course checklist once the course opens.
Q. If a student can only start on week two / they work every day / they’ll be gone for a week in the middle… can they still take a course?
A. In short, no. If students can’t commit to the timeframe and hours required to complete the course, this opportunity isn’t for them. It’s a full course completed in only four weeks. It will be time and effort intensive.

“The present is the only time that any of us have to be alive –
to know anything – to perceive – to learn – to act – to change – to heal”.
From the Resource Department:
NB’s Disability Awareness Week 2023 runs from May 28th – June 3rd and the theme for this year’s campaign is “Accessibility = Inclusion.” The purpose is to raise public awareness of existing barriers that prevent citizens with disabilities from full and equal participation in all aspects of their community and celebrate examples of best practices and advancements made towards inclusion for citizens with disabilities.
In honor of Disability Awareness Week, the Resource Department will be participating in a variety of activities to raise awareness. This includes wheelchair basketball unit in PE, wheelchair basketball activities in the large gym at noon on Tuesday and morning announcements by students that celebrate inclusion. They are also hosting their 3rd Annual Walk and Roll Challenge on Thursday, June 1st on the outside track from 12:50 pm – 1:05 pm. All students are welcome to join us!
